Well typography is a big part of all product design.  The typography incorporated with the design must make it clear to the consumer what the product is for the product be be purchased.

Our Diploma class has just completed a brief creating coffee and tea packaging.  They are all different but all wonderful, it was exciting to see what everyone had done during the presentation.  I took photos of them all with my iPhone 3Gs with sun blasting in behind the packaging from the window so I apologise if the photos are not clear, hope you like them!

Has anyone been to the Mama Shelter hotel in Paris or Marseilles? From the photos they look awesome.  If I ever go to Paris again this would definitely be on my place to stay list.  I have never been to Marseille but it is definitely on my wish list now!

The Mama Shelter Paris hotel has typography in the rooms, carpet, ceilings and walls, I would be in heaven.

The Mama Shelter Marseille hotel does not seem to have typography in the rooms but there is typography throughout the rest of the hotel, definitely one I would try to stay at.

How cool are these lounge chairs and floor lamps, I want some!

French design company Tabisso have come up with a great and funky idea, ‘Typography Furniture’. They create lounge chairs ranging from A to Z and 1 to 0.  They customise to new shapes, logos and fonts, with a variety of materials and colours.

Tabisso also create over 20 punctuation mark floor lamps ranging from ? to #.

A great thing I like about this furniture is that is locally made to order in France (so they are looking after their own economy) and the furniture is made from European wood and certified from sustainably managed forests.

Gill Sans was created by Eric Gill, apprentice to Edward Johnston.  He used Johnston typeface used for the British underground as his inspiration.

Gill Sans was discovered by Stanley Morison for its commercial potential when Gill hand painted lettering for a bookshop sign.  Morison a Monotype advisor commissioned Gill to complete a sans serif font family which was released in 1928.

Gill Sans is a very readable font that can be used for text and display.  My favorite letter in this family is the lowercase g.

All though the font is quite rounded I find the lowercase a and g quite distinctive and differ from the rest of the family, they are a little quirky and apparently have thinner strokes at the opening of the small eyes (so does the e) which is a trademark of Gill Sans.

The family has 36 derivatives and is classified as a humanist sans serif.

So I am finally getting the guts to post one of my pieces I completed.  The brief was to design an individual A3 panel, portrait format, about a type designer I was assigned that demonstrated their contribution to typography.  I was assigned Jonathan Barnbrook who uses his social conscience as inspiration.  I was pretty excited to be assigned him.  I have posted about Jonathan Barnbrook before at comicsanssheriff – Jonathan Barnbrook
